Brock Pride Week – 10 days of celebrations

Brock University is showing its colours with more than a weeks’ worth of activities to help educate, inform and entertain the LGBTQ2+ community and its allies.

While Pride Week is traditionally observed in June globally, Brock decided to host a second week of events during a time when more students are on campus. This year’s events are taking place Saturday, Jan. 18 to Tuesday, Jan. 28, deliberately spanning more than a week.

Saturday, Jan. 18

We Are The Radical Monarchs Documentary Film Screening

4 to 5:30 p.m.

The Film House, 250 St. Paul St., St. Catharines

This film documents the Radical Monarchs — an alternative to the Scout movement for girls of colour, who earn badges for completing units on social justice including being an LGBTQ ally, the environment, and disability justice.

Cost: Film House Members + Youth (13 and under): $7 | REGULAR: $9.50

Monday, Jan. 20

2SLGBTQ+ Drag Brunch 

11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Rankin Family Pavilion, Brock University

Everyone is welcome for hors d’oeuvres, speakers and a drag performance to kick off Brock 2SLGBTQ+ Pride Week.

Free Queer and Trans Concert at Warehouse 

Doors open at 7 p.m.

Warehouse Concert Hall, 11 Geneva St., St. Catharines

Warehouse will host an all Queer and Trans lineup of musicians and performers, featuring Janice Jo Lee, Saint Stone, Jermaine Marshall and Delta Don.

Entry is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring funds for the community raffle.

Wednesday, Jan. 22

Resisting Queerphobia and Transphobia in Everyday Life

2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Student Justice Centre, TH 252A, Brock University

A workshop by Vince Pacilli that focuses on resisting and dismantling institutions, actions, and spaces by which queerphobia and transphobia take place, such as the workplace, academia, ‘law’ enforcement, media, etc.

Niagara Reproductive Justice Crafting Meet Up

5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

MW 505, Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts

A space to meet and organize with other folks passionate about all forms of reproductive justice. There will be materials available to make easily transportable pillowcase signs.

2SLGBTQ+ Boxing Class 

7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Dance Studio (above the cage), Walker Complex, Brock University

This free boxing class welcomes all those who identify under the expansive umbrella of 2SLGBTQ+/QTPOC and aims to hold a fun and inclusive class while creating a safe(r) space for our 2SLGBTQ+/QTPOC community members. Classes run Wednesdays at 7 p.m. on the following dates: Jan. 22, Feb. 5, Feb. 12 — BIPOC/QTPOC only , Feb. 26 — BIPOC/QTPOC only, March 11, March 25.

Thursday, Jan. 23

Queer Makeup, Fashion and Cinema 

Facilitated by Ari Para and Siqi Wang

2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Student Justice Centre, TH 252A, Brock University

This two-part workshop will centre around queer and trans fashion history. Part one will focus on queer fashion history and its evolution, exploring the importance of resistance fashion and its role in revolutionary history. Part two will focus on makeup and how it has been used by the queer community as a form of resistance, gender identity and expression. This workshop will be informative and interactive

Friday, Jan. 24

2SLGBTQ+ Movie Marathon 

Drop in between noon and 8 p.m. Movies at noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Student Justice Centre, TH 252A, Brock University

Join us for an all-day movie marathon of 2SLGBTQ+ films, including Fire Song (2015), Game Face (2015), Pariah (2011), and Pride (2014). This will be a low-key and comfortable space to meet fellow folks from the community.

Sexual Violence and Consent Workshops

Noon to 1 p.m.

Sexual Violence Support Certificate Program: Consent and Discourse Workshop modified for Pride Week

Goodman School of Business, GSB 308, Brock University

This workshop discusses the complexity of consent and the advised response when handling a sexual violence disclosure, as modified for Pride Week to address consent and disclosures focused in on the 2S LGBTQ+ communities. Our LGBTQ+ Perspectives workshop will run on Thursday, Jan. 30 from 5 to 6 p.m. in Schmon Tower ST105.

Suicide Intervention for Weirdos, Freaks and Queers

5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Sankey Chamber, Mackenzie Chown A-Block, Brock University

This is an intro-level workshop for students who want to build and share skills around supporting people in their lives who are suicidal, with a focus on supporting people for whom mainstream mental health services may not meet their needs. Pre-registration is required and limited.
