I won the lottery. Most people check their lottery tickets immediately. Me, I checked one purchased 30+ years ago — and I won. I won the lottery of birth. I was born in Canada. I checked my lottery ticket recently while travelling abroad. I visited a number of countries, most notably Uganda. In 2009, Uganda enacted a law to criminalize homosexuality, punishable by death. It was soon after struck down by their courts, for being implemented in an unconstitutional manner. In October 2019, I visit Uganda. The following week, the law is reintroduced. Many activists have been arrested in the wake. The thing that struck me is how many homosexuals live in Uganda. Without seeking out the company of my rainbow kin, I met two gay men in the (less than) 24 hours I was in Uganda. The country is beautiful. The people are beautiful. It is hard to appreciate the beauty when one must be fearful for their life. I would encourage you to read more about what is happening in Uganda, and support organizations like the Human Right Awareness and Promotion Forum (https://hrapf.org/) in memory of Brian Wasswa, an activist, who was beaten to death just days after I left the country. Check your lottery ticket, you’ll find out you have won too.
