We had spent Mother’s Day shopping together and were finishing the day chatting over a flight of beer at a craft brewery and reminiscing. After a break in the conversation, my kid looked at me, and paraphrased a line from The Matrix–you know the one, right? “You take the blue pill—the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill—you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” With a laugh I said “Give me the red pill, already!” My only baby looked directly at me, tears in eyes and voice strained a little, and said “I think I’m trans…”
Many years ago, the child I knew as my son planned to grow up to be a dinosaur (a “big mean angry sharp-toothed meat-eater” to be exact). This year on Mother’s Day I learned that we had both been mistaken, and that she is actually my daughter instead! While having a dinosaur in the family might have been uncomfortable and hard to accept, this is not. My daughter is the same smart, funny, compassionate, and thoughtful person she’s always been, except that now she’s feeling more comfortable with herself and more confident than she’s ever felt before. I couldn’t be more proud. <3
