Humans of OUTniagara
I have recently come out as a trans male to my family. Previous to sharing my true self to those closest to me, I had to figure out a way to see how I fit in the world.
I enjoy playing video games. Here are a few tips that helped me to figure out who I am.
Find a game where you can create your own character. If that is not an option then find a game where the protagonist is the same gender that you identify with. This gives you a safe space to explore said gender. You can also see yourself as the character you have created and see how it feels. If you are not in a space where you can openly express your gender, people would just think you’re playing a game and that’s it. There are also many games that give a nonbinary or gender-neutral choice too for characters if that is something you would like to explore.
Similar to finding a character that matches your gender, if naming your character is an option name your character the name you would prefer to be called. You will have other NPC’s (Non Player Character) refer to you by that name. It worked for me and made me feel good about my name choice. All the game knows is that is your name and always has been.
I hope this helps anyone who is on a journey similar to mine.
