Humans of OUTniagara
My kids are my biggest allies. They are currently 11 and 9 and they love me unconditionally. I have raised them on my own since they were quite young at 5 and 3 when I came out to their father and my now ex-husband in 2013 (but that’s a whole other story!). Throughout the process of coming out to them, and having to explain it a few times as they processed and began to understand a bit more through their ages, they’ve had questions, made things for me, and have said some of the funniest things.
In the car having a deep conversation with my daughter…
Me: M, you know I am a lesbian, right? Remember we talked about that?
Daughter: But you’re still Canadian, right?!
While trick or treating one year…
Son: Trick or treat! My mom made this costume. Did you know my mom is a lesbian?! She’s right there (points at me).
While shopping at Shoppers Drug Mart and the cashier is putting us through…
Me to the cashier: Please put all of this together (to pay for my girlfriend’s things as well)
Son: Yeah, because did you know that they’re a lesbians?!
