OUTniagara introduces history blog
1 October 2019 (Niagara) – In recognition of October as LGBT History Month, OUTniagara is proud to announce the launch of a history blog written by Dennis Yeo, a Niagara community member.
Dennis is a former teacher who was born and raised in St. Catharines, came out as a gay man as an adult, was active in the 2SLGBTQ community in the city where he taught, and returned to St. Catharines when he retired.
Look for Dennis’s periodic blog on the OUTniagara website and our social media. The first submission will focus on LGBT History Month.
Dennis says he has been impacted by significant events in the history of the sexual- and gender-diverse community, and realizes how important it is to know and understand the impact.
“I hope to share what I’ve learned with my contemporaries who lived this history, with those who came out late, and especially with younger members of the community who came of age at a time when the rights and privileges that their elders fought for were already in place,” says Dennis.
LGBTQ History Month is observed annually and recognizes the contribution and civil rights movement of the sexual- and gender-diverse community. First celebrated in 1994 in the United States, the month was founded by Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher.
